Micro wire EDM machining is an excellent method for making high aspect micro structures in all metals and conducting ceramics and other materials such as polycrystaline diamond. Our twin wire Agie EDM system has very good accuracy with tolerances as small as +/- 2 microns or better and gives very good surface finish of as low as 0.07 microns Ra under ideal conditions. The spark erosion non-contact machining EDM process is ideal for making high aspect ratio micro structures down to a few tens of microns in size and is particularly suited to making components that are of 2D profile. However, by rotating the work piece, it is possible to machine 3D profiled objects of very small size. For injection mould tool applications, a draft angle of up to 2.5 degrees is achievable.
This can also be used for reclaiming potentially scrapped components or tooling– typically the process is ideal for removing broken taps, drills, studs, bolts or similar without affecting the work piece.
